About The Authors:
Professor Hem Shankar Ray obtained his BTech. (Hons.) in Metallurgical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (1962) and MSc. and PhD. degrees from the University of Toronto, Canada (1963 and 1966). He was with IIT, Kanpur from 1967-80 as Lecturer and Asst. Professor. In between he served as Manager cum Senior Technologist-Research and Development, Pilkington Research Centre, Lathom, England (1977-1979). He then served as Professor of Metallurgical Engineering (1980-1990) and Dean of Students Affairs (1988-90) at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. Prof. Ray served the Regional Research Laboratory, Bhubaneswar as Director from 1990-2000. He also served as Emeritus Scientist at the Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute, Kolkata. He has several patents including two US patents to his credit.
His areas of interest include thermal analysis, kinetics, extractive metallurgy, energy and R&D administration.Prof. Ray has received several awards in recognition of his work and these include the National Metallurgists Day Award, GD Birla Award and two Kamani Gold Medals of the Indian Institute of Metals. He has served several companies and R&D laboratories as consultant or member of Boards/Research Councils. He is associated with several Professional Bodies and served as President, Indian Institute of Mineral Engineers and Indian Thermal Analysis Society.
Ahindra Ghosh obtained his BE degree in Metallurgical Engineering from the Bengal Engineering College, Calcutta University, India in 1958 and his Sc.D. degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA in 1963. He was sponsored by Government of India as a Graduate Trainee at Tata Steel, Jamshedpur, India in 1958-59, and worked as Research Associate at the Ohio State University, USA in 1963-64. He also served as Professor at Department of Metallurgical Engineering, IIT, Kanpur. He spent six months with the John Percy Group at Imperial College, London as a Commonwealth Fellow in 1973 and at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA as visiting scientist in 1986. He is the author of many original research publications and has written several comprehensive monographs for teaching. He has been a recipient of Kamani Gold Medal of the Indian Institute of Metals. His research interests are in the area of physical chemistry of extractive metallurgy with specific reference to theory of iron and steel making.
