S M Yahya was born in 1938 in Jaipur. He received his early education in Jaipur and did his engineering from AMU Aligarh. Then he obtained his doctoral degree in Turbomachinery from the University of Liverpool, England in 1965. He had been serving the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi since 1967. He was the Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department during 1987-90.

Professor Yahya has designed and taught courses in Gas Dynamics, Turbomachinery and Power Plants for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. He also started and coordinated professional course programmes in Turbomachinery and Power Generation Technology at IIT Delhi, New Delhi. He worked as a chair professor for the NTPC-sponsored master’s programme in Power Generation Technology. Prof. Yahya served the Aligarh Muslim University as its Pro-vice Chancellor in 1991-92.

Besides numerous research publications, he is also the author of Gas Tables forCompressible Flow Calculations.
