Description

Viruses may have once been small cells that parasite larger cells. Over time, genes not required by their parasitism were lost. The bacteria rickettsia and chlamydia are living cells that, like viruses, can reproduce only inside host cells. They lend support to this hypothesis, as their dependence on parasitism is likely to have caused the loss of genes that enabled them to survive outside a cell. This is also called the degeneracy.hypothesis. If a virus takes up residence in a cell and alters the propertiesof that cell, the cell is said to be transformed.Transformation by a virus is the change in the biological properties of a cell that results from the regulation of the cell by viral genes and that confer on the infected cells certain properties of neoplasia. Transformation often includes loss of growth control, anchorage-independent growth, ability to invade extra cellular matrix, differentiation and immortalization. In carcinomas, many epithelial cells undergo an epithelial-mesenchymal transformation. Transformed cells often exhibit chromosomal aberrations and the changes seen in transformation often, but not always, result from the integration of the viral genome into the host cell’s chromosomes. This book contains the fundamental and basic information of subject and the selection of contents makes it an appropriate book for the students.
